When Did She Stop Apologizing for Who She Is? A Tattooed Mom’s Boudoir Story in Northern Wisconsin

It took into her thirties to stop apologizing for who she is. Yoga, fire dancing, and tattoo art helped her come home to her body, one season of change at a time. As a solo mom who has carried more than most people know, she stepped into her boudoir session already sure of her worth. This is her story, in her words.

Q: How long did it take you to stop apologizing for who you are?

A: Probably well into my thirties...sometimes I still feel there are parts of me that are unacceptable or hard to swallow for certain people and that's ok. I don't have to be everyone's cup of tea. I've worked hard to see the beauty and love within myself and I won't give that away for other people's acceptance anymore.

QWhen did you first realize your body was yours to do something with, not just maintain or manage?

A:When I started doing yoga, when I was around 20 or 21. I started learning to be more present in my body and all that it has to offer. I started dancing and doing fire and flow arts a few years later which was really an expression of celebration that feeling of healing and unity I found with myself. I decided to adorn it with tattoo art because I saw it as my home when I was living a nomadic lifestyle. They represent times of transformation and strength, beauty and love. Some represent little pieces of my life that maybe I will only ever really understand.

Q: Most women are tough in ways nobody claps for. What's something hard you've carried that not many people know about?

A: For many years I felt very dissociated from my body and my self, and I am a suicide and domestic violence survivor (different times). It's not something I talk about often, it's in the past thankfully. Those struggles don't define not who I am, but have made me more resilient and understand life and myself better. Solo motherhood has definitely not been a breeze either, but it has shown me my strength, and the dark times have made the good times so much brighter. It has brought me to create healing spaces and community through movement art.
