I loved photographing this session because there was so much more behind these artwork pieces than just looking beautiful. Her tattoos, her strength, and the life she’s built all tell pieces of her story. Knowing exactly who you are and no longer feeling like you need to apologize for it is where freedom begins.
Q: What does a woman who's genuinely at home in her own body look like to you? Have you ever felt that way yourself?
I am at home in my own body because my job as a paramedic shows me so many things that help me remind myself that even when I don't feel like I look like a super model, I have strong legs and a healthy body that allow me to live a happy, healthy, and comfortable life that many truly don't get to have. Why would I be mad at some cellulite when I have the ability to walk on my own with the very legs I could criticize? Life is too short to take simple things for granted.
Q: Your tattoos say something about who you are. Does the rest of your life feel like it matches? Why or why not?
A: I am one who admires so many beautiful tattoos on others and everyone has their own reasons or stories behind them and that is what makes tattoos so amazing to me. I think me being tattooed is often a shock to many because I am a more quiet and reserved person so when people see how many I have they are often shocked. However, I feel that my tattoos match my life and events that I have gone through because I personally love looking at my tattoos reflecting on sometimes the straight up shit I've made it through and saying "hell yes I did that, what's next." When I look at my Phoenix I remember my dad and my first horse and also my step dad who is my second chance at having a dad all in one and how horses have always kept me grounded. I look at the sunflower and compass with my mom's handwriting, "just keep swimming" to remind myself how badass my mom is and how she is always there for me giving direction and looking to the sun. So I am absolutely in my tattoos at such a deep level, but on the surface you would never know
Q: How long did it take you to stop apologizing for who you are?
A: I was the crazy horse girl in school my entire life, when I went to college the first time I wanted to escape that title and I became someone who looking back I absolutely hate and truly caused a lot of the anxiety that I carried for years. I had no strong grip on who I was at such a developmental time in my life, but then when I was back at home for breaks and was with my horse again I felt like me. Fast forward years of me searching for myself again I met my now husband who ironically had always wanted to be involved with horses, but didn't know where to start or what to do. I still had my childhood horse at this time and he learned how to ride and eventually we had my horse and a second one on our own little property and I slowly grew back to myself again. I was the horse girl again, but my husband loves me. My family loves me. My friends from high school were so happy to have the normal me back. Life is the best it's been. We recently had the most tragic loss of our 3 year old stallion prospect and I found myself questioning if how deep into horses we were diving was the right thing, but our beautiful horse community rallied behind us, and reminded me I am damn proud of who I am and there is no reason to stop or apologize for it because of the beautiful people it brought into my life and how happy I truly am
